چکیده

1 Recent droughts and heatwaves showed the vulnerability of the electricity sector to surface water 2 constraints with reduced potentials for thermoelectric power and hydropower generation in different 3 regions. Here we use a global hydrological-electricity modelling framework to quantify the impacts of 4 recent drought and warm years on hydropower and thermoelectric power usable capacity worldwide. 5 Our coupled modelling framework consists of a hydrological model, stream temperature model, 6 hydropower and thermoelectric power models, and was applied with data of a large selection of 7 hydropower and thermoelectric power plants worldwide. Our results show that hydropower utilisation 8 rates were on average reduced by 5.2% and thermoelectric power by 3.8% during the drought years 9 compared to the long-term average for 1981-2010. Statistically significant (p<0.01) impacts on both 10 hydropower and thermoelectric power usable capacity were found during major drought years, e.g. 11 2003 in Europe (-6.6% in hydropower and -4.7% in thermoelectric power) and 2007 in Eastern North 12 America (-6.1% in hydropower and -9.0% in thermoelectric power). Our hydrological-electricity 13 modelling framework has potential for studying the linkages between water and electricity supply under 14 climate variability and change, contributing to the quantification of the “water-energy nexus”. 15

Increasing drought in Jordan: Climate change and cascading Syrian land-use impacts on reducing transboundary flow

In countries where severe drought is an anticipated effect of climate change and in those that heavily depend on upstream nations for fresh water, the effect of drier conditions and consequent changes in the transboundary streamflow regime induced by anthropogenic interventions and disasters leads to uncertainty in regional water security. As a case in point, we analyze Jordan's surface water r...

Integrate land and water use planning at the scale of the urban master plan

The survival of cities as living beings and their inhabitants depends on the supply of water. Numerous factors such as population growth, climate, drought, consumption pattern, amount of available water resources and utility network affect the equation of water supply and consumption. What has been less considered in the traditional planning process than ever before is the connection between la...

Evaluation of meteorological, hydrological and groundwater resources indicators for drought monitoring and forecasting in a semi-arid climate

Drought as a natural phenomenon characterized by a significant decrease of water availability during a period of time and over a large area. In recent years, droughts and its frequent in arid and semi-arid regions like Iran on the one hand, and water demand has been rising on the other hand and, as a result, their impacts are being aggravated. Therefore, the meteorological and hydrological...

Prioritizing the Impacts of Drought on Economic, Social and Environmental Dimensions in Urban and Rural Areas (Case Study of Yazd Province)

Introduction Iran is seriously suffering from economic and social drought. Theoretically, this problem can be resolved by rebalancing the supply and demand of water through the development of supplied water resources and implementing serious water demand reduction programs. However, the current structure of Iranchr(chr(chr(chr(chr('39')39chr('39'))39chr(chr('39')39chr('39')))39chr(chr(chr('39...
